Thinking about buying a truck or trailer? Here’s a little advice from our experience.

WHEN TO BUY

Timing is everything. When the market is down, equipment prices drop. Right now, the industry is in a depression. Everyone is trying to sell. That means great deals are out there. If you’ve been waiting to buy, now is the best time!

WHAT TO BUY

Picking the right truck, brand, and specs takes serious research.
Consider:

  • Purchase cost and long-term maintenance costs.
  • Warranty coverage and availability of parts.
  • Fuel economy and how easy it is to find mechanics.

How can you make these decisions? Simple. Have a trusted mechanic who can advise you and provide 24/7 phone support. If you don’t have the mechanical knowledge or a good mechanic on call, stick to brand-new trucks with at least a 500k miles / 5-year full warranty (including towing).
What about trailers? You need to make sure there’s enough work for that trailer type before you buy it. If you’re just testing the market, don’t buy unless you have at least 6 months of savings.

WHERE TO BUY

A lot of drivers make the mistake by limiting themselves to one dealership. Don't do this, look nationwide. Search all 48 states for the best options. Narrow it down to three top offers, then take them to your local dealer for a price match.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE

  • Look for trucks that have been sitting on the lot for a long time. They’ll drop the price just to move it.
  • Tell the dealer you’ll do maintenance with them. They’ll make more from service than the sale.

WHERE TO GET BEST DEALS

Your best bet for low-interest loans? Small local banks or federal credit unions. They beat big banks every time. In today’s market if you get 8% interest, that’s very good for a commercial vehicle. But watch out, big banks will try to hit you with 10-20% interest.
