If you think about how much time you spend on the road, how many big decisions are influenced by your dispatcher, and how every day starts and ends with them, you realize something powerful: Your relationship with your dispatcher is a partnership, just like a marriage.
If you want the best results in trucking: profits, peace of mind, stability, you must build the same foundation as a strong marriage: trust, communication, loyalty, and care.
WHY DRIVER-DISPATCHER RELATIONSHIP MATTERS
At DOXA, we reject the saying: "It's just business." That’s false! Without real relationships, there are no real results. Just like prayer is our communication with God and without it, no blessings can grow. Communication between a driver and a dispatcher is the "prayer" of trucking. Without it, nothing good can happen on the road. A strong relationship leads to: more profitable loads, faster problem solving, less stress and misunderstanding, longer retention and loyalty and finally higher happiness for both sides.
HOW TO BUILD A STRONG DRIVER-DISPATCHER RELATIONSHIP
· Learn About Each Other! Know important things like: birthday, hobbies, religion, family details (spouse name, kids’ names and ages), important life events (vacations, anniversaries). The more you know each other, the better you can work together under pressure.
· Communicate Often and Honestly. Don't hide problems. Talk about delays, truck issues, home time needs, challenges early and clearly.
· Share good news too, not just complaints!
· Trust Each Other. Trust that your dispatcher is trying to help you. Dispatchers must trust that their driver is responsible and serious about the loads. Trust grows from small daily wins, not from big words.
· Be Flexible and Patient. Not every day will be perfect. Some loads will be tough, some rates will be lower, but long-term loyalty is what wins.
· Support Each Other. If your dispatcher is having a bad day, don't make it worse. If your driver had a bad week, find a better load next time if you can. This is a two-way relationship, not just orders and obedience.
WHAT IF IT’S NOT WORKING
If you feel your dispatcher is not a good fit, speak respectfully with the fleet manager. Ask for a change of dispatcher. If you have changed 3 dispatchers already and still can’t make it work: it’s time to look inside yourself. There may be an attitude, communication, or discipline issue that needs fixing. A good driver can make almost any good dispatcher work, and vice versa. Change yourself first, and you will change your relationship.
Remember: trucking is not just about wheels and miles. It's about people and trust. If you treat your dispatcher like a teammate, you will find peace, success, and loyalty that no money can buy. At DOXA LLC, we are committed to building strong people first, because strong people build strong businesses.
