Most of the things you use every day are moved by trucks at some point. Food, clothes, building materials, furniture, electronics. If it is in a store or at your door, a truck probably touched it. Because of that, the cost of trucking is part of the final price of almost every product. The cheaper it is to operate a truck and keep a driver safe and happy, the easier it is to keep prices under control.

WHY OPERATING A TRUCK IS SO EXPENSIVE

Here are the main ways higher trucking costs show up on every price tag:
- Equipment. Trucks and trailers cost far more than they used to, while warranty support and repair quality often feel weaker.
- Fuel and operating expenses. Diesel, tolls, insurance, maintenance and breakdowns all keep rising, so every load costs more to move.
- Drivers and working conditions. Drivers deserve good pay and respect, but companies also struggle with parking, infrastructure and recruiting, which all add cost.
- Parts and tires. Many replacement parts and tires do not last as long as before, which means more breakdowns and more money spent.
- Brokers and lack of regulation. Some brokers work fairly, but others keep a very large part of the rate with little transparency or accountability, while carriers carry most of the risk.

WHY THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR EVERYONE

Many small and medium trucking companies are already closing because:
- Costs are too high.
- Rates are too low.
- Support and incentives are limited.
If this continues, there will be fewer trucks, higher freight rates and higher prices for consumers.

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE

If we want stable prices and a strong economy, we need a healthier trucking industry. That means:
- Lowering the cost of operating a safe, compliant truck.
- Reducing unnecessary regulations.
- Encouraging safer and more affordable equipment.
- Setting clearer rules and standards for brokers.
- Improving infrastructure, parking and driver support.

If we want prices to stop climbing so fast, part of the answer is simple: We need to make it more reasonable and sustainable to operate a safe truck in this country.
